If you thought walking through the nearest shopping mall was bad, consider this: one of the world’s largest commercial structures, the Chicago Merchandise Mart, looms 25 stories high and spans two city blocks with over 13 miles of corridors. While nowhere near record-holding by today’s standards, back when it was built in 1931 it was easily the largest commercial building in the world.
